OAS, The Open Amiga Sampler, Introduction

This is an 8-bit sound sampler for use with your Commodore Amiga.
The Open Amiga Sampler connects to the parallel port.
I designed the 3D printed case for the sampler myself, it has on one side the opening for the DB25 connector, on the back two RCA connectors for connecting the audio source and a rotary control to adjust the input signal strength.

New, a more compact design by me, everything now directly mounted on the PCB !

Although there are two RCA jacks on the device, the sampler itself is MONO.
This means that when a stereo signal is input, it is internally mixed back to a mono signal and then sampled.
This is a design decision made to keep the design simple and the build process easy.
Also, most people who make Amiga MOD files use(ed) mono samples anyway.

If you want to input a mono signal, you only need to use one of the tulip connections (it does not matter which connection you use for that).

OAS, The Open Amiga Sampler, Application

The interface is intended for the Commodore Amiga machines and is connected to the parallel port.
The software you can use is diverse, it is a generally supported sampler principle.

This includes (later versions of) Protracker, but you can also use Audiomaster and Audition to create samples.

The Open Amiga Sampler is an existing design, open hardware created by a Github user called Echolevel.
You can find the Github Project Page here

A (semi) technical review can be found on the following YouTube page (English)

As for the housing, it is my own design and is a two-piece, easy to open and close design.

OAS, The Open Amiga Sampler, Warning!

Always turn off the Amiga when connecting the Open Amiga Sampler, or when connecting an audio device to the RCA connections.
Older devices like the Amiga are quite sensitive to static electricity and or grounding problems.
As always Better safe than sorry, just turn everything off, connect it and then turn on the audio equipment and then the Amiga.
(I sample a lot from a portable device that has no power connected, that already reduces the chance of problems considerably)

Really happy with this

As an Amiga fan, I regularly use trackers like OctaMED and ProTracker.

In the past, I recorded my IFF samples on a PC using GoldWave and then had to transfer them to my Amiga in a rather clumsy way. First through floppies, later using Compact Flash cards.

It was a time-consuming process that often pulled me out of my creative flow.

These days, finding a reasonably priced sampler for the Amiga is a real challenge. With the Amiga gaining popularity again thanks to online exposure, devices like the TechnoSound Turbo have gone up significantly in value.

I had known about the Open Amiga Sampler project for a while, but I never had the time or energy to dive into a hardware project myself. I’m more of a software person.

So when I found this pre-assembled version from Ed (Gotek.nl) on 2dehands at a very fair price, it was a no-brainer. I ordered it right away.

As soon as it arrived, I hooked it up to my Amiga and my patchbay. The included manual is short and to the point. Definitely worth reading, as it contains important info on safely disconnecting the sampler. Anyone familiar with 90s hardware knows most devices from that era are not hot-swappable.

It even came with a small bag of winegums, which shows the level of care that went into packaging everything.

This sampler is going to massively improve my workflow, especially when recording sounds from vinyl and CD.

I already know I’ll be enjoying this during the holidays and for a long time to come. 🙂

Amiga Sampler

Old Samplers for the Amiga are very sought after, rare and usually pretty expensive. But Eddie made it finally happen to get a new build one at an affordable price, crafted with usual high quality like his other well known products. Thank you very much Eddie, we retro enthusiasts appreciate your great work very much!
