External Gotek in Atari ST design with 0.96 Oled display, Rotary and Buzzer

You may wonder why an External Gotek in Atari ST design with 0.96 Oled display, Rotary and Buzzer...

Me too :), I wanted to make a design that, as an external Gotek, is more in line with the family of Atari ST computers in wedge format (STf / STfm / STe / Falcon).
With these models you often have the Gotek on top of or next to the Atari and how nice is it when the design matches the machine itself.
I did not intend to make an exact copy of the design, the External Gotek in Atari ST design with 0.96 Oled is more inspired by it 🙂

If your gotek is going to be used externally, the eye also wants something.

External Gotek in Atari ST design with 0.96 Oled display, Rotary and Buzzer, the details:

Atari ST design:
I opted for both the design and the color in my design, something close to the Atari ST, slightly inspired by the SF 314 , an exact color shade has proven impossible due to the '50 shades of Atari'

Rotary encoder: The rotary encoder allows you to easily scroll through the images, and in combination with an Oled display it also allows you to browse through directory structures.
Furthermore, the Rotary Encoder also has an eject / insert function when you press the button, which is nice if you want to start without booting directly from the disk.

External Gotek in Atari ST design with 0.96 Oled display, Rotary and Buzzer, more details:

0.96 Oled display: With the help of the Oled Display you have visual support when you browse, you see the names of the images and can therefore easily select the file of your choice.
Furthermore, the Oled display allows you to browse through folder structures, something that is not possible with the 3digit display.

Buzzer: The buzzer is a nice gimmick that can be of added value, especially for retro computer enthusiasts, it provides a true-to-life experience of the disk drives of yesteryear *cough*. The buzzer imitates the sound of the stepper motor and head movements, (at a soft level)

External Gotek in Atari ST design with 0.96 Oled display, Rotary and Buzzer
External Gotek in Atari ST design with 0.96 Oled display, Rotary and Buzzer, connecting:

To connect the Gotek externally you need an external floppy interface to connect it to your machine.
For the wedge models, after connecting and booting up the external drive will be available as B:
In order to boot from an external Gotek you will need to find a way to make the external drive drive A:.
This could be done with a boot selector, but unfortunately in many cases this means cutting IC legs and soldering wires to achieve this.
Without such a boot selector you can actually only use the Gotek as a 2nd drive, there is a possibility to realize this without having to do too much to your Atari ST:
Jumper the external drive as S0 instead of the normal S1 position, remove the power of the internal drive, now the internal drive will no longer be recognized and the external drive will be addressed as A: *

* Using the External Gotek in this way in Atari ST design with 0.96 Oled display has always worked so far, but I cannot guarantee that it will also work with your system as described!

There is also a version with a 0.91 Oled Display available, which you can find here

Notice : when using software that is 2 or more disks, after selecting and mounting the next image, press  esc to activate the newly selected image.

Good addition for my STE

Now i have a fast and easy way to watch new and old Atari software on my real 1040 STE.
The Gotek drive ( external with 0.96 Oled display btw.) boots .st if you set the jumper to M0 wether the internal drive is without power or not.
With the jumper on S1 i could use it as drive B but it did not boot from there if drive A was empty.
My machine has the Rainbow TOS 1.62.
I like the sound it makes during loading, its a nice feature.
Delivery was flawless and the contact with Ed was friendly.
Altogether i am quite happy to have bought this hardware and grateful someone still builds things like this in our day.

Great!

This Gotek floppy emulator is working fine on the first try with my old Atari STF. I tried it as internal drive and also as external drive (set jumper to S1 instead S0). Perfect.

Thanks to Ed for his kindness and advice.

Really nice implementation of a flash drive for the good old Atari ST

The Gotek Floppy Emulator is a really nice implementation of a flash drive for the good old Atari ST.
I ordered it along with a deluxe cable adapter (which came with a nice enclosure for the plug from a 3D printer).
The emulator works like a charm, I had to disconnect the internal drive for the normal operation (to setup the disks in the AUTOBOOT menu).
Should also work as drive B when pre-configured. Booting (is not guaranteed) I haven't tested so far, when connected as drive B.
But as a drive A it all works like a charm. On top: Fair process in the ordering. No unannounced lead times.
Money is requested only when the order is on its way.

Ed is a wonderful Retro ST Guru, thank you!

It works really well!!

This Gotek-Floppy-Emulator is exactly what I wanted. Now I can load the *.st Images by USB-Stick to my ATARI ST. The has a nice ATARI-Design, the OLED 0.96-Display gives precise information and the Rotary-Button makes it comfortable to choose the image. I can recomend this device, thanks a lot.
