why an External Gotek in Atari ST design with Rotary encoder, a 0.91 Oled display and Buzzer you may ask...

Me too 🙂 , I wanted to make a design that as an external gotek is more in line with the family of Atari ST computers in wedge format (STf / STfm / STe / Falcon).
With those models you often have the gotek on top of or next to the Atari and how nice is it when the design matches the machine itself.
I didn't intend to make an exact copy of the design, it's more inspired by 🙂

If your gotek is going to be used externally, the eye also wants something.

External Gotek in Atari ST design with Rotary, 0.91 Oled display and Buzzer, the details:

Atari ST design :
For both the design and the color I have chosen in my design, for something close to the Atari ST, slightly inspired by the SF 314 , an exact color tone has proved impossible because of the '50 shades of Atari'

Rotary encoder : The rotary encoder allows you to easily scroll through the images, and in combination with an Oled display it also allows you to browse through directory structures.
Furthermore, the Rotary Encoder also has an eject / insert function, when you press the button, nice if you want to start without booting directly from the disk.

0.91 Oled display : With the help of the Oled Display you have visual support when you start browsing, you see the names of the images and can easily select the file of choice.
Furthermore, the Oled display allows you to browse through folder structures, something that is not possible with the 3digit display.

Buzzer :
The buzzer is a nice gimmick that can be of added value especially for retro computer lovers, it provides a true-to-life experience of the disk drives of yesteryear *cough*.
The buzzer imitates the sound of the stepper motor and head movements, (at a soft level)

External Gotek in Atari ST design, connecting :

To connect the Gotek externally you need an external floppy interface to connect it to your machine.
For the wedge models, after plugging in and booting up, the external drive will be available as B:
To boot from an external Gotek you will need to find a way to turn the external drive into drive A:.
This could be done by a boot selector, but unfortunately in quite a few cases this means cutting IC legs and soldering wires to get that done.
Without such a boot selector you can actually only use the Gotek as a 2nd drive, there is a possibility to realize this without having to do too much to your Atari ST :
Jump the external drive as S0 instead of the normal S1 position, remove the power from the internal drive, now the internal drive will not be recognized and the external drive will be addressed as A: *

* this always works so far, but I can not guarantee that it will also work with your system as described

Notice : when using software that is 2 or more disks, after selecting and mounting the next image, press  esc to activate the newly selected image.

Works on Atari TT (jumper on S0)

After a bit of tweaking, I can confirm that the external Gotek, together with Ed's supplied cable for the Atari external floppy disk works fine!
In my case (early Atari TT with TOS 3.01) I had to open the case and set the jumper from S1 to S0. Then it works flawlessly.
Remember to ALSO attach an internal floppy drive, otherwise the external GOTEK will not work.

Ed's support was great (although he still doesn't believe I had to switch to S0 :-))) - keep it up!

Excellent product

The "pimped" Gotek looks stunning, and works really well. Can recommend it for anyone looking into adding rather than exchanging the disk drive. Installation was easy, too - lots of good instructions available. Thanks very much!
