Absolute Beginners : Connecting the Eiffel Deluxe to the Atari ST

Connecting the Eiffel Deluxe to the Atari ST, new revision is ready

I already had been asked if it was possible to connect the Eiffel deluxe to the Atari ST.
Theoretically this should be no problem, and since i received a new revision PCB of the Eiffel deluxe, that had some minor changes, i decided to test and describe the steps to take to get the Eiffel deluxe going on the Atari ST.
(If i say atari ST, i mean the ST family that has a 8 pin internal keyboard connector (Check for the correct pinout before connecting the Eiffel).

Connecting the Eiffel Deluxe to the Atari ST : Eiffel's 4pin connection

The Eiffel Deluxe interface has a 4 pin header for connecting the interface to the Atari ST.

Why a 4 pin header whilst the ST has a 8 pin header you may ask yourself : well for 2 reasons, first, there are only 4 necessary signals that are needed to connect to the Atari computer, and secondly, i wanted to keep my design compact, and thus 4 extra (unneeded) pins would take up double the space.
The pinout for the Eiffel 4 pin header :

Pin 1  : +5volt  (Nearest the grey RJ12 connector)
Pin 2 :  RXD
Pin 3 :  TXD
Pin 4 : GND

Connecting the Eiffel Deluxe to the Atari ST : the ST's 8 pin header.

On the Atari ST Side there is a 8 pin connector , where pin 1 is closest to the front of the Atari ST.
Pin 2 is Not Connected, and on the connector of the keyboard that hole is blocked so it cannot be reversed while connecting it.
The pinout of the Atari ST 8 pin connector (Between parentheses you'll find the responding Eiffel Pin)

1 - gnd            (Eiffel 4)
2 - nc
3 - floppy light
4 - +5V           (Eiffel 1)
5 - Rx data    (Eiffel 2)
6 - Tx data     (Eiffel 3)
7 - reset
8 - Unknown

Connecting the Eiffel Deluxe to the Atari ST, Ordering a ST version :

I will populate the 4 pin header on the Eiffel Deluxe only when ordered, so think about it when you order one.
You need to populate it yourself, or you can ask me to populate it for you.
I will be providing 20-30 cm cables with 4 and 8 pin headers (with the keying pin blocked on the ST side) for the ST connection, OR with a curlycable for the Mega connection.
But when connecting it to the ST, make absolutely sure to respect the +5 volt pin, otherwise you will fry something.
Please specify if you want to connect to ST when ordering, default i will deliver the Atari Mega Eiffel Deluxe version with a curly cable for attaching it to the Mega.

If you have a mega, get one!

If you have an atari mega, buy one.

In case your keyboard poops out, this is a lifesaver.

Works like a charm!

Great product, superb service

I ordered the Deluxe Eiffel for ST which was sent immediately and came nicely packaged with a few treats.
Most important: it just works and now I can use my Mega ST without the need of the Atari keyboard which seems to be getting more expensive and rare by the minute.
I am so happy that this solution also includes the joystick ports. Thanks for your work!

Eiffel interface Deluxe

Very good contact, highly recommended. Products are very good. Always happy to buy one. Think it's cool that people like Eddie continue to develop retro things. Thumbs up, thank you very much, mfg Ronny
