May i present to you , The Cupcake Cartridge for the Commodore C64 / C128
This Cupcake cartridge means that you immediately have your favorite programs at hand when you switch on your Commodore 64/128.
You don't have to load anything, just turn it on and you will get a menu with the saved programs in front of you
I had already assembled these over a month ago, but haven't had time to actually test them on a Commodore C64.
I got a C64c from the attic yesterday, nicely vacuum packed like most of my collection and what is ALWAYS the first thing what do you do when you connect an old C64 with power supply?
Yes indeed, measure the output voltages
. The Commodore 64 can only handle a limited voltage of 4.9 - 5.2 volts, the more above the maximum value, the faster the components will give up. 4.9-5.1 volts : Excellent condition
(After about 35 years 🙂, I don't think anyone at Commodore would have dreamed that the Commodore 64 would still have such a large fan base nearly 40 years after its introduction.)
5.1-5.2 volts : a bit too high, measure the voltage more often
5.2-5.5 volts : on the way to failure, your c64 will break faster if you keep using it for a long time
5.5-6.0 volts : Your commodore is in serious danger if you use this power supply.
6.0 and higher : At this voltage your C64 will fail very quickly, usually the memory chips are the first to fail.
The power supply gave 5.19 volts and was therefore still reasonably within the specifications!
After giving the machine a thorough cleaning, I wanted to test it, unfortunately I couldn't find a video cable so quickly, so I soldered a new one.
I happened to have a just tested Philips CM8833, which was connected to the C64 and voila image
Then I could actually test the Cupcake Cartridges for functionality.
Immediately after plugging in and turning it on (Always turn off the C64 when you insert a the Cupcake cartridge !!) I was presented with a menu, a number of diagnostic programs for your computer and peripherals, some other tools and a number of games.
The programs all started without any problems and did what they were supposed to do.
The Cupcake Cart is :
- A 64KB size Commodore 64 cartridge.
- Designed to turn any * .PRG file into a Commodore 64
cartridge (conversion is done manually).
- Not suitable for running multi part programs.
- Can also be used as a standard 16KB C64 game cartridge.
