The Amiga 'RGB to VGA Sync Adapter (Dongle)
This Replica adapter makes it possible to connect a 15 Khz VGA (LCD) monitor to your amiga.
Both the horizontal and vertical Sync signals are buffered.
Before you start cheering, there are quite a few snags to this statement.
The VGA Sync adapter allows you to physically connect a VGA monitor, but whether you actually get an image depends on a number of things.
The Amiga needs an analog RGB (color) monitor or a high-quality color TV to display images.
Update :
i now have a battery powered 15khz tester that you can put to use on location when you are on the hunt for a 15khz capable monitor
These color monitors that can be used on the Amiga can be divided into 3 categories.
The difference between the different monitors is in the supported horizontal sync frequencies:
Video monitors : such as the Commodore 1084 series, only the standard Amiga 15 kHz sync rate is supported by these, for the sake of convenience we also classify the color TV under the video monitor category.
VGA-only monitors : Only the 31 kHz VGA sync rate is supported (DBL, Multiscan, and Productivity modes).
Multiscan (or multi-sync) monitors , such as the Commodore 1942, 1950 and 1960, support the whole range of Amiga Sync rates.
Amiga screen modes (*Depending on Chipset)
PAL 320×256 - 1280×512 50 Hz, 15.60 kHz
NTSC 320×200 - 1280×400 60 Hz, 15.72 kHz
Euro36 320×200 - 1280×400 73 Hz, 15.76 kHz
A2024 1024×1024 15 Hz, 15.72 kHz
Super72 400×300 - 800×600 72 Hz, 24.62 kHz
DblPAL 320×512 - 640×1024 50 Hz, 29.45 kHz
DblNTSC 320×400 - 640×800 59 Hz, 29.20 kHz
Multiscan 640×480 - 640×960 60 Hz, 31.44 kHz
Euro72 640×400 - 640×800 70 Hz, 31.43 kHz
What can be done :
- With a 15 kHz supporting or multisync monitor everything.
- Works with an (S)VGA monitor, workbench (from 2.0) and applications/games that support the VGA compatible resolutions, (no image during boot until the Workbench is loaded in the supported resolution).
What cannot be done :
- Workbench 1.3 (does not support VGA supported resolutions)
- Running a (S)VGA monitor, games or software that forces a different resolution than the workbench resolution that is supported by VGA, then the image goes up black and the monitor may indicate that the signal is 'out of range'
VGA Sync Adapter Summary :
If you don't have a 15 kHz supporting monitor, it's cumbersome to say the least to work in VGA mode. Once you're in the Workbench, and your application supports the resolution, there's no problem.
But when you start the amiga you have a black screen until the Workbench is loaded, so also Pre-Boot menu, Guru Meditation's and other error messages you do not see on your VGA monitor.
In that case it is wise to have at least a 2nd monitor somewhere to hand in case you can no longer access your Workbench and you have no idea what is going on.
The Amiga : VGA Sync Adapter :
- Is a Replica of the original Amiga VGA sync adapter (See photo on the right).
- Comes without a housing
- Features a modified DB-25 to DB-23 plug.
