Absolute Beginners : You want to add a Gotek to your Amiga (Introduction)

Amiga 500 with a Gotek drive Extern

Absolute Beginners: You want to add a Gotek to your amiga

Welcome to the first article in the Absolute Beginners series, focusing on Amiga and Gotek floppy drive emulators.
I'm going to try not to write a lengthy story, but to briefly address a number of frequently asked questions.
This article is mainly intended for people who have heard the bell tolling 🙂
There are different types of amigas and different types of gotek, more on that later.

Absolute Beginners : You want to add a Gotek to your amiga : type amigas

There are roughly 2 types of Amigas, the wedge models and the big box models, although they are quite similar in functionality, there is quite a bit of physical difference.

What they have in common: if you want to connect a Gotek externally to your Amiga, there is little difference, both types have an external floppy connection, and the same interface goes into it.

Internally there is a big difference, where the Big box Amigas can accommodate a more traditional floppy drive (and therefore a Gotek), a wedge model cannot, it often concerns unusual drives so a Gotek will not fit.

You want to add a Gotek to your amiga : Wedged models
Absolute Beginners: You want to add a Gotek to your amiga: the wedge models

You have the Amiga 500, the 600 and the 1200, they all have an internal drive that is not easy to replace with another disk drive or a Gotek.
They have come up with something for that, so-called disk brackets, which ensure that the printed circuit board of the Gotek is placed in such a way that the buttons and USB stick can be operated from outside.
The display is in the floppy slot, and can only be viewed if you look into the slot (on the side).
For all wedge models there are at least 2 different disk brackets:

For the standard 3 digit display, the same functionality as a regular Gotek floppy drive emulator
And one for the 0.91 Oled Display, this one gives you the ability to read file names as well as the ability to browse through (sub)directories.

Absolute Beginners: You want to add a Gotek to your amiga: the Bigbox models

For the bigbox models it is a bit easier, at least for the 3000 and 4000, they have a factory standard size and a gotek can be placed in the place of a floppy drive.
For the amiga 2000 this is unfortunately not the case because they use a drive with a front that is higher than a factory standard drive.

Fortunately, there are now brackets available to place a Gotek in an Amiga 2000, brackets with Rotary Encoder, Buzzer and a 0.91 or 0.96 OLED display.

The khaki color is not available, so brackets are often only available in a different color.

And finally, the external gotek, which comes in all shapes and sizes and can be connected via an interface to any bigbox or wedge model amiga .

You have:

Standard Gotek (3 digit display)
Standard Gotek with rotary encoder
3D printed Gotek with 0.91 Oled display, Rotary encoder and a Buzzer
3D printed Gotek with 0.96 Oled display, Rotary encoder and a Buzzer

The 3D printed Goteks have a housing for the Amiga that resembles that of the wedge model Amigas and are available in the colors beige (resembling an undiscolored Amiga 500), white/light gray (resembling an undiscolored 600/1200) and in black.

Absolute Beginners: You want to add a Gotek to your Amiga : what else do you need?

Of course, a Gotek alone is not enough (at least in most cases)

we will cover that in part 2 of the 'You want to add a Gotek to your Amiga' topic.
